Team Bonding at San Clemente martial arts school!
On Tuesday August 7th, Gracie Barra San Clemente was proud to host the Saddleback Valley Christian School football team. The players were able to have a team bonding experience off the football field and step on the mat for first time. The team was led through a warm up with some movements unique to Brazilian jiu jitsu before learning self-defence techniques under the guidance of black belt Professor Felipe Guedes.
Gracie Barra San Clemente Coach Danny DeViso (pictured above) explained during the class that football players and jiu jitsu practitioners have many similarities including healthy bodies and strong minds. Towards the end of the class the team was able to try some of their new jiu jitsu skills on the mat against the Gracie Barra San Clemente coaches. It was a different experience for a team coming from a sport with a culture of winning and losing to a sport where winners and losers are nonexistent. Although the team varies in size, they were able to learn that jiu jitsu is for everybody regardless of how big or small they are.
The class ended with a powerful speech from Professor Guedes on bullying, “imagine all high school football teams across the country having an anti-bullying attitude where they would not allow anyone to be bullied inside of their schools,” he explained. “If anyone was suffering from bullying, they would know they could count on the football team for support to stop it, there would be no more bullying problems in America.”
