The cost of Workaholism and Why Martial Arts Can Help

Workaholism Cost = Underperformance + Disrupted Family + Health Problems

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is founded on the idea of balance. This is an important skill BJJ students devolop though proper training but its application goes beyond the physical practice. As martial artists we strive to excel in many areas of our lives and yet we can’t over due stuff.

In the Jiu-Jitsu world being workaholism leads to over training and an unbalanced life. In other words, training or working too much damages performance in the long run. As students we need to have to accept resting is part of our training and we must take that lesson to our daily lives.

Very often we hear people say they do not have the time to do martial arts. Attending a Jiu-Jitsu class for 2-4 hours a week will create too much pressure on their schedule and is not worth to give up other things that are filling up the 168 hours they have in a week.

We ate Gracie Barra San Clemente Jiu-Jitsu firmly believe there is much more in martial arts than learning howe to fight. As Professor Felipe Guedes says, “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a way of living our lives. Fighting provides an opportunity for us to understand better who we are, recognize our limitations and grow from them”. Once our students see Jiu-jitsu as a venue for personal growth, priorities shift and finding the time for being in class is no longer an issue.

If you are not convinced yet, think about other costs associated with workaholism. If you work long hours, ask yourself “how much is it taking away from me and what am I getting in return? A typical answer argues that it makes sense sacrifice family time, hobbies and execising program because it gives them an edge at wortk that can lead to promotions or a better paycheck.

This thought can be misleading. If you look into a 40-50 carrer lifecycle, workaholism will probably cause more harm than good. The amount of time off and financial losses derived from healthy issues and family disruptions will probably offset any gains.
