Potential by Eric Devericks

Last Saturday was another fulfilling day in the life of our students, coaches and professors. Everyone was united again under the picture of Master Carlos Gracie Jr , sharing the love for Jiu Jitsu and the mutual support for personal development.

Every time our students get together something special happens with such a positive environment. On the next day, our dear student Eric Devericks (Blue Belt 4 stripes), whose 3 kids also train Jiu Jitsu sent me this email…

“Potential”

By Eric Devericks

One of the great things about Gracie Barra is the wisdom the professors share with us. Today Prof. Flavio said he doesn’t believe that people don’t change, instead he says, people are in a constant state of change.

I think he’s right. It’s all choices. What do you choose to do with yourself? Some people work hard to stay the same, you see it all the time. They pass on that new experience or that great opportunity believing that they will wait for the elusive “next time”. But choosing to pass or to wait is choosing to stay the same, meanwhile, the world passes you by and you are left with the painful knowledge of what you could have become and your lost potential. You will see it in the lives of those around you who have grown, learned, loved and lived.

Make no mistake, action is not an easy path. It requires hard work, perseverance and constant reflection on your actions. Accepting your own potential is to accept the burden that the journey is never complete and that you can never rest. You accept the burden that your potential is only limited by your own choices. Choose to become more, to become better, embrace the journey and never look back.

The first step is knowing where you fall short, where you need to focus.

That’s what’s great about Jiu Jitsu. The mats reveal the truth. If you’re a coward, it shows. If you are weak or timid, it shows. If you’re a bully, it shows. If you are unprepared, it shows. If you care about your training partner it shows. Jiu-jitsu teaches you about yourself, from there, only you can choose what to do with it.

Choose to be more. Sure up your weaknesses. Learn, live, grow, study. Strive to reach your potential, the alternative is to live with regret.
